Holy Family
Holy Family
2019

Inspired by my Lesbian girlfriends who have had children through IVF or adoption, this sculpture examines motherhood without patriarchy. A breastfeeding female figure with an infant is perched in the lap of her lover; who holds a flower headed child. While the human child is literal, the flower headed progeny is a metaphor for the labor of women who birth so much change into the world. The swing refers to traditional Hindu depictions of families along with the artworks of Yinka Shonibare and Fragonard. Holy Family subverts the imagery of heteropatriarchal, religious idols and updates the idea of family.
